RIS (also called intelligent reflecting surfaces) are planar surfaces with many passive reflecting elements whose properties can be electronically controlled. Each element adjusts phase (and potentially amplitude) of incident waves, enabling intelligent wavefront manipulation. Benefits: Create virtual LoS paths in blocked environments. Enhance coverage without power amplification (passive). Low power consumption (only control circuits). Beamforming and focusing without traditional antenna arrays. Challenges: Large number of elements (hundreds to thousands) for meaningful gain. Channel estimation for many elements with passive operation. Joint optimization of transmitter and RIS configuration.
