What is tolerance in engineering design and why is it necessary?

Tolerance is the permissible variation in a dimension or geometric characteristic of a part. It is necessary because perfect manufacturing is impossible and economically impractical. Tolerances ensure parts function correctly while allowing for manufacturing variations, tool wear, and material properties.
