1 What is the difference between absorption and adsorption?
Easy Mass Transfer

Absorption is a bulk phenomenon where molecules penetrate into the entire volume of a material (e.g., gas dissolving in liquid). Adsorption is a surface phenomenon where molecules attach only to the surface (e.g., activated carbon filtering). Absorption involves volume interaction; adsorption involves surface interaction. Both are used in separation processes like gas scrubbing and purification.

2 What is the difference between CSTR and PFR, and when would you choose one over the other?
Medium Chemical Reaction Engineering

A CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) has perfect mixing with uniform composition throughout, operating at outlet conditions. A PFR (Plug Flow Reactor) has no axial mixing, with composition varying along the length. For positive-order reactions, PFR gives higher conversion for the same volume. CSTR is preferred for highly exothermic reactions (better heat removal), viscous fluids, and when uniform product quality is needed. PFR is chosen for high conversion requirements, gas-phase reactions, and when residence time distribution must be narrow.

3 Explain the concept of LMTD in heat exchanger design.
Medium Heat Transfer

Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD) is used to determine the driving force for heat transfer in heat exchangers. LMTD = (deltaT1 - deltaT2) / ln(deltaT1/deltaT2), where deltaT1 and deltaT2 are temperature differences at each end. It accounts for the varying temperature difference along the exchanger length. Q = U*A*LMTD, where U is overall heat transfer coefficient and A is heat transfer area.

4 What is HAZOP and why is it important?

HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) is a structured technique to identify potential hazards and operability problems in process plants. It uses guide words (NO, MORE, LESS, REVERSE, etc.) with process parameters (flow, pressure, temperature) to systematically examine deviations. HAZOP is critical for process safety, required by regulations, and helps prevent accidents during design and operation phases.

5 What is cavitation in pumps and how is it prevented?
Medium Fluid Mechanics

Cavitation occurs when local pressure drops below the liquid's vapor pressure, forming vapor bubbles that collapse violently when pressure increases. It causes noise, vibration, impeller damage, and reduced performance. Prevention requires ensuring adequate NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head): NPSHavailable must exceed NPSHrequired. Methods include reducing suction lift, increasing suction pipe diameter, subcooling the liquid, reducing pump speed, or using a booster pump.
