Sample Questions & Answers

1 What is the difference between one-way and two-way slab?
Easy Structural Analysis

A one-way slab has a length-to-width ratio greater than 2, where loads are primarily transferred in the shorter direction to supporting beams. A two-way slab has a ratio less than or equal to 2, distributing loads in both directions. Two-way slabs require reinforcement in both directions and are more efficient for square or nearly square panels.

2 Explain the concept of workability in concrete and factors affecting it.
Medium Concrete Technology

Workability is the ease with which concrete can be mixed, placed, compacted, and finished without segregation. It's measured by slump test, compaction factor, or Vee-Bee consistometer. Factors affecting workability include water-cement ratio (higher W/C increases workability), aggregate properties (shape, size, grading), cement content, use of admixtures (plasticizers, superplasticizers), and ambient temperature.

3 What is bearing capacity of soil and how is it determined?
Medium Geotechnical Engineering

Bearing capacity is the maximum load per unit area that soil can support without shear failure. Ultimate bearing capacity (qu) is determined using Terzaghi's equation considering soil cohesion, surcharge, and unit weight factors. Safe bearing capacity = qu / Factor of Safety (typically 2.5-3). Field tests include plate load test, standard penetration test (SPT), and cone penetration test (CPT).

4 What is the CBR test and why is it important for pavement design?
Medium Transportation Engineering

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) is a penetration test comparing soil strength to standard crushed stone. CBR = (Test load / Standard load) x 100. It's performed at 2.5mm and 5mm penetration. CBR values help determine pavement thickness - higher CBR means stronger subgrade requiring thinner pavement. IRC recommends soaked CBR for design to account for worst-case moisture conditions.

5 What is CPM and PERT? How do they differ?
Easy Construction Management

CPM (Critical Path Method) uses deterministic activity durations for projects with well-defined activities, focusing on time-cost trade-offs. PERT (Program Evaluation Review Technique) uses probabilistic estimates (optimistic, most likely, pessimistic) for projects with uncertainty. CPM is activity-oriented while PERT is event-oriented. Both identify critical path - the longest sequence determining project duration.
