A one-way slab has a length-to-width ratio greater than 2, where loads are primarily transferred in the shorter direction to supporting beams. A two-way slab has a ratio less than or equal to 2, distributing loads in both directions. Two-way slabs require reinforcement in both directions and are more efficient for square or nearly square panels.
